Day 13 - Chapter 2, Verses 23-28

As he was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath, his disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain.

At this the Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?" He said to them, "Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry? How he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the bread of offering that only the priests could lawfully eat, and shared it with his companions?"

Then he said to them, "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath."

God is in charge of everything on the earth. In what ways are you conscious of this? In what ways do you think that you are very much in control of everything?

I was leading a small group last Sunday in consideration of the third commandment - Keep holy the Sabbath. The adult catechism says "The Sabbath brings everyday work to a halt and provides a respite. It is a day of protest against the servitude of work and the worship of money....Millions of people in our culture deny themselves a day of rest....We should treat rest as sacred." We got into a discussion of why we feel driven to be so BUSY. Someone said that we do it to convince ourselves that we are in control. When we stop and think, we realize that we are radically dependent upon God. That can be uncomfortable until we live into the beauty of it.
