Day 7 - Chapter 1, Verses 21-27

Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.

In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" Jesus rebuked him and said, "Quiet! Come out of him!" The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.

All were amazed and asked one another, "What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him."

What kind of authority does Jesus and his teaching have in your life?

Why did Jesus want the unclean spirit to be quiet? Isn't there a period of time where Jesus doesn't want people to know who he is? Why?

The longer answer is coming in the notes on Chapter One, which you can access at http://www.stalphonsuschgo.org/Mark75/aboutChapter1.pdf.

The shorter answer is that there is a motif in Mark's Gospel called the "Messianic secret." Only select people (and demons) recognize Jesus, including at the end of his life. In the beginning chapters of the Gospel, it is more obvious, as Jesus tells those who discover him to be quiet.
